Marian's Journal

2010.06.06 - Miho looks like she's likely to embrace the herb cultivation side of the project with the sowing of thyme. We also planted out the purple kohlrabi seedlings.

2010.06.20 - Bought support poles for eggplant and sweet pepper.

2010.06.27 - Still in search for the optimal setup for certain plants we'd like to cultivate, we decided to invest a little into pots and special treated soil, cloche cover and its support sticks to build a tunnel and, naturally, into the seeds themselves: basil, peppermint, rucola, sunflower.

2010.06.30 - Sowed basil, and rucola in pots, and the sunflower in the prepared seedbed. Finally got around and erected supports for the eggplant and the sweet pepper.

2010.05.01 - With me having fun overseas, it was left on Miho to take care of the Southern lot, thinning the radish and the potato, doing some necessary weeding and sowing the kohlrabi.

2010.05.05 - Started assembling the greenhouse skeleton on the Northern lot.

2010.05.08 - Still assembling the greenhouse; halfway there.

2010.05.14 - Rather rushed on due to certain pressures, we've made a last minute decision to plant some cucumber, eggplant, sweet pepper and tomato next Sunday, so we bought seedlings today, all 38 of them.

2010.05.15 - Bought black protection foil, in the hope that it'll keep the weed at bay and, most importantly, the soil a little more moist and less hard.

2010.05.16 - Planted the 5 cucumber, 12 eggplant, 15 tomato, and 6 sweet pepper seedlings that we bought a couple a days ago. Also sowed beetroot and planted out the leaf lettuce.

2010.05.23 - Bought 20 support poles for sweet pepper and tomato. We've sketched plans for a dedicated space where Miho could cultivate her own selection of herbs, and named it the Herb Corner. For it, we placed an online order for coriander, fennel, and sage.

2010.05.26 - The online shop is getting better with respect to the delivery dates. We already got the seeds ordered on 23rd.

2010.05.30 - Placed temporary support sticks for eggplant, sweet pepper, and support poles for cucumber and tomato. Thinned the carrot and the kohlrabi, and prepared the soil for Miho's Herb Corner.

2010.05.31 - Bought a gardening hose system. Miho inaugurated her Herb Corner with the sowing of coriander, fennel, parsley, and sage.

2010.04.04 - Acquired from our landowner the skeleton of a greenhouse, rather old and rusty, it's true. Brought it home, with the intention of assembling it into a vinyl-covered greenhouse.

2010.04.25 - Tiled the yet uncultivated soil on both lots with an automatic tiller borrowed from my boss. Sowed carrot and Japanese radish.

2010.03.14 - Working by hand, I've completed around one quarter of the soil preparation for beetroot, carrot, kohlrabi, leaf lettuce, mustard, parsley, radish, and thyme.

2010.03.15 - The need for seeds got me sifting through a number of potential seed suppliers with on-line presence; fortunately, I thing I've identified one that would likely become my source.

2010.03.20 - E-shopping brought me the seeds listed above, except for the carrot and leaf lettuce, which I bought locally.

2010.03.21 - Sowed leaf lettuce in a dedicated sowing bed of 7x7. There have to be around 200 seeds in there now, waiting to become seedlings.

2010.03.22 - Finished soil preparation for: lettuce, beetroot, carrot, mustard, thyme, radish, parsley, and kohlrabi. Sowed parsley and mustard.

2010.03.23 - Brought home some rice bran (~120 l) to serve as local protection from rain and frost for the newly sowed vegetables.

2010.03.28 - Partially sowed radish and beetroot.
